Use OEM Parts on Safety-Critical Components · NEVER field-splice a cable Cable, winch assembly, brake disc, ratchet pawl, sheave, fork carriage, and outrigger latches are safety-critical. Per Sumner Manufacturing's published guidance, only factory replacement parts should be used — non-OEM substitutes may have different metallurgy, heat treatment, or dimensional tolerances and can compromise designed-in safety margins. And a rule that applies regardless of the part source: a lift cable is never field-spliced. Any damage triggers full-cable replacement per the wire-rope inspection thresholds; splicing, soldering, or reforming a damaged section is prohibited.
